While the fees will not hurt everyone, some third-party developers say the new bills from Reddit would be exorbitant. But this month, the company detailed what the cost would be, causing outcry among some of the third-party apps. In April, Reddit announced new fees for allowing third parties to access the site's data. Huffman says he's willing to negotiate with third-party developers wanting to have "productive conversations" "The protest, what it really affects is the everyday users, most of whom aren't involved in this or the changes that spurred this," Huffman said. Huffman characterized the Reddit protesters as a small but vocal cadre of angry users who are not in touch with the greater Reddit community. Huffman said the action did not cost the company much, even though it managed to create "a fair amount of trouble," he said. The coordinated backlash had a rallying cry: "Don't Let Reddit Kill 3rd Party Apps!" It lasted for 48 hours, but some groups have extended the "blackout" period. Reddit is used by some 57 million people every day to discuss all sorts of things, like news developments share memes and favorite recipes swap stock market tips and chronicle public photos of bread stapled to trees.īut on Monday, Reddit's unpaid volunteer moderators turned thousands of discussion groups private, making them inaccessible. This is something we we truly I mean, everybody here is talking about democratizing access to health care. We're taking it therapy that really has been relegated to the major, you know, the major research institutions and bringing it to Tucson, Arizona, to Marietta, Georgia to Dubois, Pennsylvania. But what's really exciting is we're already growing this market. And in addition, over 80% of our first accounts are Greenfield accounts and actually we just got the Christ Hospital in St. We have signed a deal with McKesson that makes us the preferred provider of scalp cooling for us oncology, the largest private oncology network in the United States that touches over 30% of all cancer patients in the US. And what's very exciting for us is since we went commercial in the second half of last year, we've just had outstanding traction. Well, when you take that math about our recurring revenue from the sale of CAP systems, that leads trailing revenue over the next five years just for our first major year of scalable sales, over $16.3 million, which is a pretty great business. Our target this year is to sell total of 90 systems. So we currently are commercial on the market. And this is really key for us because we're truly taking this therapy from being what I like to refer to as the redheaded stepchild of oncology for something that finally is really profitable and scalable. And so what that means for us as cooler heads we're generating for each of these systems $180,000 over their useful life. Within the first year, our machine is profitable for infusion centers returning almost $100,000 over the useful life of the machine. Well, with Medicare reimbursement of $1,850, the portable cooling unit is paid off after the first 15 patients and since each machine should be able to treat a minimum of 30 patients a year. ![]() The machines are designed to be in service for about five years, hence the service contract for years two to five. And each patient needs their own cap system which we sell for $1,100. So our portable cooling units are sold to infusion centers at an average sale price of $11,000. So how does this work? What what how, what is this magic hope we providing. So our business model not only doesn't change patient workflows for the infusion centers, but we now actually make this therapy profitable for them. And here's the real kicker, Medicare is now reimbursing for scalp cooling. Our patented cap system is designed to have superior fit, improving overall patient outcomes. Omma is designed so that when patients are done with their chemotherapy infusion, and they have several hours of therapy left, they get up and they complete their treatment someplace else in the waiting room in the atrium, and they cafe and sometimes even at home. We last year when commercial with a product we call Alma, which is the first portable, affordable and scalable solution for scalp cooling. So patients often wind up with patchy bald spots which is just as disfiguring is going bald, which is the opportunity that we seized. ![]() In addition, the model to date has been cash pay, it's been incredibly expensive for patients between two and $8,000 out of pocket, and the systems don't fit well. It doubles the amount of time a patient is in an infusion chair, decreasing patient workflows, so it simply isn't financially feasible for most infusion centers to offer it. The challenge with this therapy is to date, it has been prohibitively expensive. It's a therapy known as scalp cooling, which is known to be safe and effective. And there is a solution for hair loss from chemotherapy. Because hair loss from chemotherapy is a massive red light to the entire world that this patient is undergoing a massive medical crisis, and it prevents them from going about their day to day life as they would prefer to. And this is a huge deal for cancer patients. This bandana represents to everybody, including him that he's sick. And he actually talks a lot about how some people look great bald, but he really isn't one of them. He's currently undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma. This is Congressman Jamie Raskin at a congressional hearing last month. ![]() ![]() Not to mention above your head, the planes are also dropping bombs with great destructive power on you and your teammates. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() īonobos and chimpanzees are the two species which make up the genus Pan, and are the closest living relatives to humans ( Homo sapiens). Unaware of any taxonomic distinction with the common chimpanzee, American psychologist and primatologist Robert Yerkes had already noticed an unexpected major behavioural difference in the 1920's. Major behavioural differences between bonobos and chimpanzees were first discussed in detail by Tratz and Heck in the early 1950s. In 1933, American anatomist Harold Coolidge elevated it to species status. Schwarz published his findings in 1929, classifying the bonobo as a subspecies of chimpanzee, Pan satyrus paniscus. The bonobo was first recognised as a distinct taxon in 1928 by German anatomist Ernst Schwarz, based on a skull in the Tervuren Museum in Belgium which had previously been classified as a juvenile chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes). The name is thought to derive from a misspelling on a shipping crate from the town of Bolobo on the Congo River near the location from which the first bonobo specimens were collected in the 1920s. The name "bonobo" first appeared in 1954, when Austrian zoologist Eduard Paul Tratz and German biologist Heinz Heck proposed it as a new and separate generic term for pygmy chimpanzees. The name "pygmy" was given by the German zoologist Ernst Schwarz in 1929, who classified the species on the basis of a previously mislabeled bonobo cranium, noting its diminutive size compared to chimpanzee skulls. Etymologyįormerly the bonobo was known as the "pygmy chimpanzee", despite the bonobo having a similar body size to the common chimpanzee. Bonobos typically live 40 years in captivity their lifespan in the wild is unknown, but it is almost certainly much shorter. The species is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and is most threatened by habitat destruction, human population growth and movement (as well as ongoing civil unrest and political infighting), with commercial poaching being, by far, the most prominent threat. There are no concrete figures regarding population, but the estimate is between 29,500 and 50,000 individuals. Bonobos live south of the river, and thereby were separated from the ancestors of the common chimpanzee, which live north of the river. As the two species are not proficient swimmers, the natural formation of the Congo River (around 1.5–2 million years ago) possibly led to the isolation and speciation of the bonobo. Īlong with the common chimpanzee, the bonobo is the closest extant relative to humans. Because of political instability in the region, and the general timidity of bonobos, there has been relatively little field work done observing the species in its natural habitat.Īccording to studies published in 2017 by researchers at The George Washington University, the ancestors of the genus Pan split from the human line about 8 million years ago moreover, bonobos split from the common chimpanzee line about 2 million years ago. The bonobo inhabits primary and secondary forest, including seasonally inundated swamp forest. The species is predominantly frugivorous, compared to the often highly omnivorous diets and hunting of small monkeys, duiker and other antelope exhibited by common chimpanzees. The bonobo is found in a 500,000 km 2 (190,000 sq mi) area within the Congo Basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Central Africa. Some individuals have sparser, thin hair over parts of their bodies. ![]() īonobos are distinguished from common chimpanzees by relatively long limbs, pinker lips, a darker face, a tail-tuft through adulthood, and parted, longer hair on its head. Taxonomically, the members of the chimpanzee/bonobo subtribe Panina-composed entirely by the genus Pan-are collectively termed panins. While bonobos are, today, recognized as a distinct species in their own right, they were initially thought to be a subspecies of Pan troglodytes, due to the physical similarities between the two species. The bonobo ( / b ə ˈ n oʊ b oʊ, ˈ b ɒ n ə b oʊ/ Pan paniscus), also historically called the pygmy chimpanzee (less often the dwarf chimpanzee or gracile chimpanzee), is an endangered great ape and one of the two species making up the genus Pan (the other being the common chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes). ![]() ![]() ![]() The first time I tried the food was with a group of friends and we shared almost every side order and a couple burgers. Like every other Mike Shatzel establishment, the draft beer selection is top notch. Our Meal: We’ve visited ABV several times since they opened their doors to the public in March, mostly for late night drinks. On top of having wine on tap and a TV hidden behind the beer tap list, the bar also has elaborate copper tubing that runs through out the liquor selection that feeds a water facet (used when customers order a liquor ‘neat’ and need a drop or two of water). The restaurant has a unique look and feel the walls are covered in classic vinyl covers, there’s plenty of exposed lightbulbs and the beer tap handles are old metal tools. After a lengthy construction process, the restaurant and bar opened in March 2015 in the former Quaker Bonnet Eatery. The restaurant is owned and operated by Mike Shatzel who also owns The Moor Pat, Blue Monk, Liberty Hound and Coles (you may have heard of them). For taste, ambience, location, PATIO, and drink choices, Allen Burger Venture has Vegetarian Buffalo’s stamp of approval.Quick Info: Allen Burger Venture (or ABV) is small, casual craft beer bar and restaurant that serves a variety of gourmet burgers in Allentown. Obviously a little on the expensive side since the vegetarian burger is over $10, but the value is all there. Our friends enjoy ABV too, so it’s a good restaurant to agree on when we’re looking for food in Allentown. The VerdictĪpproved! I like this place a lot and the husband loves it. Well, aside from Five Guys (who has a nice veggie sandwich, but is literally nothing to write about, hence, not on this blog), so, let’s call the two comparable. All I know is I eat more fries here than I do at other burger joint. But this isn’t Red Robin with those crappy frozen steak house fries–this is Allen Burger Venture with fresh, delicious, Handcut Fries. Normally it would be annoying that there was something on my plate I’m not keen on finishing. Towards the end of the sandwich, I laid open the burger and just ate the rest of the fillings and left the bun. It’s a fine roll to be sure, but there are just a lot of excess carbs in this sandwich that the brioche roll doesn’t really lend itself to. The one thing I don’t care for, actually, is the brioche roll. The house made patty was definitely a win and this particular trip was actually the second time I’ve ordered it, so that speaks to what I really think of it. There was also a wonderful pesto that was served on the patty that lent a necessary tang to the whole ensemble. If you’re into black bean burgers, it looks like fun. I could have gone with the vegetarian option on the specials menu: a Spicy Black Bean Burger. It was a toss up in regards to vegetarian and vegan choices. But enough with the drinks, of which there are plenty–time to get to the meat of the subject. A little on the pricey side, but they turn out a good cocktail. Want a cocktail? I’m not disappointed with the Ruby Tuesday, layering Deep Eddy’s Grapefruit vodka, cranberry juice and soda water over ice. Located at 175 Allen Street, ABV has decent indoor seating and a great little outdoor patio. ![]() This location is fantastic as I’ve always loved Allentown. Happily, that scenario doesn’t apply to Allen Burger Venture. That doesn’t work for me as I have a soy intolerance, so I’m hardest on restaurants that call that cuisine. So many restaurants cop out by throwing a frozen soy bean patty in the microwave and calling that good. ![]() Vegetarian burgers are always tricky for me. He floated more than a hundred miles before renting a U-Haul, in Mechanicville, and driving home, dejected. Philip Katz, a sixty-three-year-old packaging entrepreneur, had launched a standup paddleboard in Burlington, Vermont, on Lake Champlain, and hoped, as he put it, to “see how much is left in my tank” en route to New York City. But the storms also thwarted the ambitions of a waterborne pilgrim who might have crossed paths more amiably with the determined canoeists. On the plus side, this augured fewer yahoos in powerboats to contend with as the Hudson narrowed, beyond Haverstraw. Rain and more lightning were in the forecast. Nearby, Wilkinson’s four-year-old son, Oscar, was strutting with a “He-Man sword,” as Ranco called it, that the paddlers had fashioned from driftwood they’d found beneath the Palisades. “Freddie’s wife said September 1st,” Ranco said. He invoked his ancestral language when mentioning a nickname for their vessel: “ Chi Jeckin Agwiden, or Big-Ass Canoe.” The crew included members of four nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and one self-described “white guy,” Freddie Wilkinson, a professional mountain guide who is writing a book, for National Geographic, about the history of the canoe, from birchbark to big-ass.
